Kerbal Space Program: Native vs Proton

Linux CachyOS, kernel linux-cachyos 6.10.6-3, GTX 1050ti with 560.35.03 drivers, i5-9400F at 1366x768 and 16GB RAM. The game's settings are what the game defaulted to, except with the FPS unlocked, no mods installed. Proton (in this case proton-cachyos) significantly outperformed the native game, additionally, a popular graphics mod called EVE is buggy or doesn't work on native because the mod makes directX calls specifically.

# Top runs: * **Highest FPS**: `KSP_PROTON-CACHYOS` with an average FPS of nearly 3% higher than the native run. * **Smoothest FPS**: `KSP_PROTON-CACHYOS` with a lower standard deviation in FPS by approximately 10% compared to the native run. * **Best overall**: `KSP_PROTON-CACHYOS` as it demonstrated both a higher FPS and smoother performance. # Issues: * The native run demonstrated significantly more variation in FPS, approximately 30% higher standard deviation than Proton. * There is a higher CPU load in the Proton run, nearly 20% more compared to the native run, suggesting higher resource usage. * The Proton run reported higher VRAM usage by about 20% more compared to the native run. # Summary The comparison between the native and `Proton` (`proton-cachyos`) versions of Kerbal Space Program on CachyOS revealed that the Proton version significantly outperformed the native version in terms of average FPS and stability. Despite slightly higher resource usage and temperatures in the Proton run, the benefits in smoother and higher FPS make it the preferred choice for optimal performance in this gaming environment.
